Motherboard, Processor, Memory
Intel’s i5-6400 is Intel’s latest entry level quad-core processor from Skylake. It may have a much lower base clockspeed but it has much lower power consumption than the i5-4460 and a 5% performance gain clock for clock comparing so. Also, it will boost to just 0.1GHz lower on all cores.
We have gone with a H170N-Wifi is a great choice for a ITX Skylake motherboard, it has TWO Intel Gigabit NIC ports (more than you’ll ever need) and it has a Intel 7260AC serving up WiFi duties. Sure it may not have 6 USB3.0 ports on the back like the ASRock H170M-ITX/ac but it has a superior WiFi chipset and superior audio too. Additionally, it has a Type-C USB 3.0 connector at the back which makes up for the 2 missing USB ports. It’s plenty.
Zotac GTX970 Twin Fan is the ideal GPU for 1440p gaming and actually, the 970 can be overclocked even further.
Integrated sound is really good these days and the motherboard we chose uses a Realtek ALC1150 Audio ASIC which is the best Realtek Audio ASIC around and I have praised the ALC892 before.
The budget door has been opened wider allowing for more storage options so there you are. 240GB SSD and a 3TB HDD. The Zotac SSD Premium is our favorite as it’s not only cheap but also reliable with a great warranty coverage and it’s also a fast SSD too.
The Superflower Leadex 550w Silver comes with a enormous 140mm fan and is quiet because of the big fan additionally it will run in semi passive mode too.
The CoolerMaster Elite 110 is a cute little ITX case from CoolerMaster that supports fullsize ATX power supplies and it will take long GPUs should you decide to upgrade.
Cooling in a SFF case is a challenge but a Deepcool Gabriel is a very good low profile CPU cooler and it’s cheap too.
The Dell P2416H is the cheapest 1440p monitor around, though, 24″ is not very big these days but not everyone has room for a 27″ monitor.
